Neo-liberalism as Creative Destruction”;
Robert W. Cox
Quote:
“To turn the neoliberal rhetoric
against itself, we may reasonably ask, in whose particular interests is it that
the state take a neoliberal stance and in what ways have those interests used
neo-liberalism to benefit themselves rather than, as is claimed, everyone,
everywhere”
Meaning:
For Harvey, neo-liberalism is a theory
of political economic practices that human well being can be advanced by the maximization
of entrepreneurial freedoms within an institutional framework characterized by
private property rights, individual liberty and free trade. Harvey states that
there was a drastic shift in the share of income and wealth away from labor and
secondly, politically, that neo-liberalism was a reaction to the rising social
movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s. Harvey called this shift of share “The
restoration of class power”, neo-liberalism was from the beginning an Endeavour
to restore class power tp the richest strata in the population.
Chosen:
I chose this quote because neo-liberalism
has played its part in financial meltdown and it has redefines citizens as
consumers. Neo-liberalism has been criticized for giving markets too much power
of our lives. It has the effects as “the rich grow richer and the poor grow
poorer”, a sad and true reality.
Global Perestroika” by Robert W. Cox
Quote:
“Those of us who abhor the social and
political implications of the globalization project must study its
contradictions in order to work for its eventual replacement.”
Meaning:
Globalization is a control mechanism,
available to those states with the resources to be able to engage in it via
capitalism, while globalization can contribute to interdependence, the tow
concepts are not identical, indeed, globalization can just as likely generate
relationships of dependence and reinforce inequalities in the international
system. It’s not a true sense of what Cox envisions as internationalism and
will not work towards a fair system that all can participate in.
Chosen:
I chose this quote because I believe
that globalization is the context that has is the context that has altered the
balance of class forces in the advanced industrial societies, and in turn this
alteration has been to the detriment of those thought to be advantaged by it. Globalization
it’s asserted, viewing globalization as a feature of the demise phrase oblique us
to interpret it as an outcome of processes that have been operating for much
longer than the last two or three decades.
