G.K. Chesterton, “What is America?” in What I Saw in America; Randolph Bourne, “Transnational America”
G.K. Chesterton, "What is America?"
"America is the only nation in the world that is founded on a Creed"
Meaning:
This quote means justice and liberty for all, because we are all created equal. America is a union of faith and freedom, in which faith elevates freedom and freedom tempers faith. the American creed does not impose parochial faith upon its citizens but protects freedom of religion by invoking a more universal authority. That creed is that all men are created equal and that the government exists to give that justice, the justice that we all deserve.
America is a government of the people, by the people and for the people; a democracy in a republic. American stands behind the core values of the american creed, the beliefs that the government is for the people and that power is given by those governed, and this nation is an inseparable one. Values that we as belonging to an American nation should abide for.
Chosen:
I chose this quote because I feel extremely proud to belong to a nation where my values are respected as well as my freedom of speech. A nation where I can share my beliefs and where I feel protected by the law. America is one of the greatest nation in the world, it helps improve the quality of life of those who abide by the rules. It is also important to give back to the Country that has done so much for everyone and one way to give back is by obeying its law.
Randolph Bourne, "Transnational America"
" As long as we thought as Americans in terms of the "Melting-Pot", our American Cultural tradition lay in the past"
Meaning:
This quote means that America was supposed to be the melting pot, where everyone was allowed to come and "melt" into the large American culture. Disregarding the fact that not everyone wants to be assimilated. Bourne felt that with this combination of cultures and people, America would be able to grow into a Trans-National nation, which would have connecting cultural strings with other countries. The author also felt that America would grow more as a country bu broadening people's views to include immigrants's ways instead of comforting everyone to the melting pot ideal. America does not have a real distinct culture because all of the immigration. It is the diversity and willingness of the United States to assimilate different cultures what makes the U.S the country it is.
Chosen:
I chose this quote because it does speaks about the American culture today. The United States is a country of immigrants. It's a place where people from all over the world comes to build a better life. Some people come to this country with families, some with their favorite things, some with nothing but with a lot of determination, but one thing we all have in common as immigrants is that we bring our culture, our beliefs that we hold closely tied to our country of origins. By bringing different cultures to the America Nation, we are creating a melting pot, where all cultures mixed in. We do not have a partial culture, but many. What makes the United States a great nation is the acceptance of different cultures within a culture.
