T.H. Marshall, “Citizenship and Social Rights”; Michael Mann, “Ruling Class Strategies and Citizenship”; Charles Tilly “Where Do Rights Come From?

Citizenship and Social Class by T.H. Marshall
Quote: “All who possess the status are equal with respects to the rights and duties with which the status is endowed”

Meaning: It means that for Marshall a concept of citizenship bears a certain relevance to present day society. For Marshall as women are recognized in society as much more important and vital citizens, their status and therefore their rights increase; proven to be an excellent way in which citizenship is viewed.

Chosen: I chose this quote because as men or women, we are equal to the rights and duties within society and those rights should be respected in every single citizen as long as that person is a member of the community and serves, respect and value the community.

Ruling Class Strategies and Citizenship by Michael Mann
Quote: “Dominant powers may impose their strategies on lesser powers; or the lesser may freely choose the domination's strategy because it is obviously successful modernization strategy”

Meaning: it means that power inequalities often lead to domination. Domination can involve significant pressures for ingratiation, increase vulnerability and throw one into undesirable power relations. It also means that, power inequalities often dominate against the lesser powerful and make people un-free.

Chosen: I chose this quote because   as it states, dominant may impose their power against the most vulnerable and less fortunate. For example slaveholders dominate slaves; men in patriarchal societies dominate their wives and so on. I believe we all should be able to express our feelings and not be abuse and subordinate by the most powerful.
Where do Rights Come from by Charles Tilly
Quote: “How did ordinary people get the power to enforce such weighty obligations?, or did they emerge from struggle at a national level?

Meaning: Tilly Charles emphasizes how rights came upon in society and who create them, how these people get to have the power to create such rights, his answer is because of national struggle. Meaning, we do need rights. Society generates the need for rights, to say that those rights must be recognized in society and therefore coming natural in the sense of justification.

Chosen: I chose this quote because rights do regulate the use of coercion in society and therefore they are essential to social order, regardless of who created them.

  1. I agree with both what you and Marshall are saying. Marshall wants to let people know that men and women are suppose to have equal rights. Although, in today society women are still look down upon. Over the years a lot has change by women having the right to vote, to work, and to own properties. But, their still differences between women and men. For example, men till this day are still getting payed more than women, especially minority women. A woman gets payed 80.7 cents for every dollar a male makes. There are still disparities going on that may change over time. I agree men and women should have equal rights. However, people are aware of these things going, but it takes time to change.
